Quite an unpleasant episode on the bus today. An Eastern European man went to the front and asked the Caribbean bus driver a question. The man’s English was poor and the bus driver’s was no better so the question was unintelligible and the answer worse. After shouting ‘what?’ at each other for a bit it devolved into a shouting match with the man demanding to be let off the...

Had a superb meeting with Lucasfilm today. Their offices are by far the nicest I’ve seen at any company on either side of the Atlantic. Luxurious, spacious, beautifully designed and presented. And every wall and nook houses some amazing artifact or artwork or collectable. Besides the obvious (the original Millennium Falcon models, concept artwork, posters, etc) I saw a complete set of Disney...

Kno-nothing
I am struggling with the Kno Advisory Panel. It’s designed very much like a game where you recruit people or perform actions in exchange for points. This isn’t an ideal way for me to contribute and is almost useless for getting information about the Kno. I’ll keep at it for a bit longer but not a great start.

Kno
I’ve joined the Kno advisory panel. Let’s see how this goes.

Great Ideas
Work is having a charity auction and one of the lots is a complete set of the Penguin Great Ideas books. I’m a big fan of Phil Baines’ work - he did the covers for some of the series - so I’ve put in a bid. To be honest, I’m not sure where I’ll put 100 books if I win.

Panasonic GF2
The GF2 was announced today. It’s very impressive but I’m sticking with the GF1 as the best MFT camera.

Dear Mr. Johnston, Thank you for your response attempting to assist me in my Nikon purchase. However, I find your recommendation preposterous and extremely strange coming from a so-called expert. First of all, the D700 at $2,450 is far beyond my budget, which I told you is $400, and way too much overkill for a photographer just setting out, and your suggestion that I purchase 35mm ƒ/2 and...

Rereading Moby Dick and becoming increasingly obsessed with whales, whaling and sea captainry in general. Interesting facts: They don’t say ‘Thar she blows’ when sighting a whale in the book; it’s ‘there she blows’. Pre-industrial whalers could behead a whale (important for getting the sperm oil out of the head) in 10 minutes. Ahab was a serious badass. ...

Fable
Finished Fable 3 last night after three days of very casual play. It wasn’t on rails so much as in a short, very confining, tunnel. I’m sure I missed lots, but now that I’m king and have saved the world (can you have spoilers in a genre this cliched?) I don’t really care about the rest. I enjoyed it but think it was more Fable 2.5 than 3. Thank God for trade-in.
